No-Fuss Papaya Salads for Tent Camping: Fresh, Fast, and Packable

A crisp, tangy green papaya salad that comes together in minutes at the campsite. Shredded green papaya is tossed with lime juice, fish sauce, chili, and crunchy peanuts for a refreshing no-cook meal.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 medium green papaya peeled, seeded, and shredded
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice about 1 lime
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce or soy sauce for vegetarian
  • 1 small red chili thinly sliced, or to taste
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey
  • 1/4 cup roasted peanuts roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes halved
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro chopped
  • salt to taste

Method
 

  1. Peel the green papaya with a vegetable peeler. Cut it in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds.
  2. Shred the papaya using a box grater or a mandoline into thin strips. Place in a large bowl.
  3. In a small jar or bowl, combine lime juice, fish sauce, sliced chili, minced garlic, and brown sugar. Shake or stir until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Pour the dressing over the shredded papaya. Toss well with your hands or tongs to coat evenly.
  5. Add the cherry tomatoes and half the peanuts. Toss gently.
  6. Taste and adjust with a pinch of salt or more lime juice if needed.
  7. Top with remaining peanuts and fresh cilantro. Serve immediately, or cover and eat within 2 hours.
