Homemade Apple Cider Vinegar for Tent Camping

Make your own apple cider vinegar from apple scraps using a simple two-stage fermentation. This tangy, probiotic-rich vinegar is perfect for cooking, cleaning, and natural remedies at camp.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups apple scraps (cores and peels) organic preferred
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 4 cups filtered water non-chlorinated

Method

  1. Place apple scraps in a clean glass jar. They should fill about half the jar.
  2. Dissolve sugar in water and pour over the scraps until fully submerged. Leave 1-2 inches of headspace.
  3. Cover the jar with a cloth and secure with a rubber band. Store in a dark, room-temperature spot for 1 week. Stir daily.
  4. After 1 week, strain out the solids and return the liquid to the jar. Cover again with cloth.
  5. Let it ferment for 3-4 more weeks, tasting weekly. Once it reaches your desired tanginess, transfer to a bottle with a tight lid.
